Cataract surgery is highly effective for most patients, but those with co-existing eye conditions may continue to experience reduced vision. We provide post-surgical low vision care to help patients manage these ongoing challenges safely and confidently.
Cataract Surgery Co-Management for Low Vision Patients
How Cataracts Affect Your Eyesight
A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, often caused by aging, metabolic conditions, or certain medications. Cataracts typically develop slowly and may eventually interfere with daily activities like reading, driving, or recognizing faces.
There are three main types of cataracts:
Subcapsular cataract – This form develops at the back of the lens and is more common in individuals with diabetes or those taking high doses of steroid medications.
Nuclear cataract – Found in the central (nuclear) zone of the lens, this type is most commonly associated with aging.
Cortical cataract – These are characterized by white, wedge-shaped opacities that begin in the lens periphery and progress toward the center in a spoke-like pattern.
When Cataract Surgery Isn't the Final Step
While cataract surgery often restores vision, patients with underlying conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetic retinopathy may still experience significant visual limitations after surgery. In these cases, a standard eyeglass prescription may not be enough to fully support functional vision.
